East Hampton Contemporary
East Hampton, NY
“What appeared to be just another ‘once-modern’ house is now an inviting and entertaining piece of art”
2500 square feet
2 acres
Our client wanted to transform a very ordinary 1960’s contemporary located in a quiet East Hampton neighborhood into something “exciting and fresh.” Additionally, they stressed the importance of staying “on-schedule and within-budget.”
Key Design Features
To add surprise to the front entry and open the living space, we replaced an awkward and unattractive wood stair with a new “floating” staircase. Made of maple risers and treads with stainless steel cable railings and black granite bottom treads, this stair became the sculptural focal point a new Great Room located to the right of the front entrance.
To give the small home a unique, signature look, and to invite more of a dialog between the interior and exterior of the home, a stepped pattern of new cottage-style windows was designed for the front façade.
To provide a more modern interior to the Great Room, the existing dramatic sloping ceiling was highlighted with cable lighting. To add drama to the Great Room, an existing drab fireplace was updated with sculptural niches and internal lighting.
