Courtland Farm
Easton, Maryland
7500 square feet- main house
2500 square feet- guest house/garage
Our clients wanted new vacation home built on their existing horse farm that reflected Maryland’s Eastern Shore sense of permanence and history.
Key Design Features
To capture a sense of history and reflect the region’s architecture, we designed the new home using hand made brick, white clapboard, and double hung windows for the exterior façade.
To maximize views of the horse pastures and distant river, two wings were designed to extend from the large main two-story brick structure.
To protect the interior rooms from the summer sun and heat, porches were designed along the entire rear of the structure. These porches allow shading from the summer sun and provide a path for summer breezes to circulate and cool the interior of the home. In addition, these porches allow warmth from the lower winter sun to penetrate the home in the cooler months for greater energy efficiency.
To provide an interior focal point when entering the home, we designed a graceful floating main staircase, which curves gently up to the second floor guest bedrooms.
To give guests privacy and drama in the Guest House, we designed a two story great room with a casual switch back stair up to the bedrooms above.
