Kitchen With A View
Riverside CT

Interior Design by Laura Kaehler Architects Interior Design
As the central part of the new home we designed for our client, the kitchen needed to reflect and compliment the contemporary open floor plan of the house. We chose a clean aesthetic for the kitchen with a neutral palette of materials of whites, grays and natural woods.
Using simple white shaker style cabinetry doors, thick Danby marble countertops, lagos azul mosaic tile backsplash and stainless steel appliances, we were able to keep a restrained yet dynamic appearance.
The layout consists of a series of work zones. The clean up area with sink and dishwasher has windows to look out to the south and views out to the garden. The cabinets with solid wood doors above this counter make packing up the dishes from the dishwasher easy and convenient for setting the breakfast table.
The cooking and prep areas are set against the opposite wall with ample space for several cooks. A professional style range with a chimney style hood is the wall’s main feature. The nearby island gives more counter space for extra helpers.
There are always some guests who prefer to watch the activities without being in the thick of things and the peninsula with bar seating is perfect for them.
A kitchen isn’t just about the preparation of food but should also be a place to feast one’s eyes on the details of the space. A band of high glass uppers lit from within meant for the display of pretty objects rings the room. A series of painted beams visually tie the beaded board ceiling to the cabinetry below and completes the room.
